چکیده

Understanding what makes a good wood adhesive is difficult since the type of adhesive, wood species, bonding process, and resultant products vary considerably. Wood bonds are subjected to a variety of tests that reflect the different product performance criteria in diverse countries. The most common tests involve some type of moisture resistance; both wood and adhesive factors influence this moisture related failure. Models have been developed to explain the adhesive performance. The proper microscopic and spectroscopic techniques can lead to a better understanding of the failure mechanism so that improved adhesives can be designed and bonding processes can be optimized.

Adhesives for Achieving Durable Bonds with Acetylated Wood

Acetylation of wood imparts moisture durability, decay resistance, and dimensional stability to wood; however, making durable adhesive bonds with acetylated wood can be more difficult than with unmodified wood. The usual explanation is that the acetylated surface has fewer hydroxyl groups, resulting in a harder-to-wet surface and in fewer hydrogen bonds between wood and adhesive. This concept w...

Adhesion Mechanisms of Durable Wood Adhesive Bonds

This chapter presents and discusses the current state of the art regarding adhesion mechanisms in characterizing durable adhesive bonds for wood composites. Particular emphasis is placed on phenol-formaldehyde (PF) and polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) adhesives. An overview of current adhesion mechanisms is presented with an emphasis on categorizing adhesion mechanisms relative ...

Cellulose nanofibrils as filler for adhesives: effect on specific fracture energy of solid wood-adhesive bonds

Cellulose nanofibrils were prepared by mechanical fibrillation of never-dried beech pulp and bacterial cellulose. To facilitate the separation of individual fibrils, one part of the wood pulp was surface-carboxylated by a catalytic oxidation using (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) as a catalyst. After fibrillation by a high pressure homogenizer, the obtained aqueous fibril dispers...

Sodium fluoride addition to a two-step etch-and-rinse adhesive system: effect on dentin microtensile bond strength and durability

Introduction: Studies have suggested that sodium fluoride (NaF) has an inhibitory effect on the activity of endogenous matrix metalloproteinase enzymes. This study assessed the effect of a fluoride-containing adhesive on microtensile bond strength (µTBS) over time. Material & Methods: In this experimental study, 36 extracted  third molars were used to evaluate the µTBS of...

Effect of metal nanoparticles on hardness in particleboard

Effects were studied of 200 ppm silver and copper nano-suspensions, with size range from 20 to 80 nm, on the hardness of particleboards produced at an industrial scale at the Iran-Choob Factory, Iran. Metal nano-suspensions were added to the mat at two levels of 100 and 150 milli-liters/kg dry weight wood particles, and the results were compared with those of the control panels. Results showed ...
